ABOUT THE SPEEDWAY

Canandaigua Speedway is also often referred to as “The Land of Legends” for the
history behind the half-mile clay facility on the Ontario County Fairgrounds. Many
famous names in Northeast racing have raced the speedway that has helped carve their
names into the history books over the past five decades. Originally the track was a
large 5/8-miler, some even say today 3/4-mile, as it played host to the NASCAR
Sportsman division. The old track surface is currently the pit line up road that
runs in back of the pit grandstand. In the late 1960s the speedway surface was cut
where turns three and four now exist, which was originally used for the once
prominent Late Model or Hobby Division. In the early sixties the facility took on a
nickname not known to many today, as it was dubbed “Canandaigua Speedland” as the
Fairgrounds was used as a multi-faceted speedplant, with both drag racing on the 1/8
mile strip running along with the regular stock car program. During the late sixties
and early seventies the speedway went dark before being leased by Waterloo native
Dominic Tantello. This only lasted for a short period of time as DIRT founder Glenn
Donnelly took the speedway reigns in 1977 and made Canandaigua a part of DIRT of the
Central New York Circuit along with Rolling Wheels Raceway and Weedsport Speedway.

PREVIOUS WINNERS

The Sunoco/Aplus Sportsman Super DIRT Series West Division will be on hand Thursday
night to undercard the Advance Auto Parts Modified Series century grind. There have
been 10 previous Sunoco Race Fuels-Hoosier Tire Sportsman Super DIRT Series events
held at Canandaigua Speedway. In 1991 local talent Kevin Blacken won the initial
Series event while present day Sportsman campaigner Scott Schrader picked up the win
in '92. He will be a force to reckon with as he has three wins to date in Sportsman
action at Canandaigua. Bobby Paine, brother of Modified standout Steve Paine, won
the Series event in ’93. There were no Series events on the schedule for the
Sportsman division again until ’98 when Jerry Haers, brother of “Elite Eleven” racer
Justin Haers, won the extra-distance race. Eastern N.Y. star Chris Schultz took the
win from the Central and Western N.Y. racers in the final year prior to the
millennium. Current Modified star Matt Sheppard won the 2000 event at “The Land of
Legends” as he began the new century by leading a list of up and coming stars of the
future. Chad Brachmann wheeled his way to the win in '01 before track regular and
Canandaigua Speedway Sportsman all time feature win leader Paul Guererri got the win
in 2002. Adam Ferri and 2004 Sunoco Race Fuels Sportsman Mr. DIRT Champion Scott
George won events at Canandaigua in 2003-4 to bring us to this year'ss West Region
contest. George also went on to claim the overall Hoosier Tire-Sunoco Race Fuels Mr.
DIRT Sportsman Championship in 2004.

TRACK HISTORY

Canandaigua Speedway has a long and storied history which dates back to Memorial Day
of 1953 when then Bath, N.Y. upstart Dutch Hoag won the first ever event held on the
Fairgrounds oval. Hoag not only won the opening day event, the 'Dutchman' went on to
pick up track titles in the first two seasons of racing (’53-’54). The speedway has
had its share of Hall of Fame stars find the checkered flag including Western N.Y.
standouts Billy Rafter, Cam Cagliardi, Ed Oritz, father of present day Pro Stock
Champion Jipp Ortiz, as well as Kenny Meahl. NASCAR legends from the east invading
the Finger Lakes were Billy Wimble, Pete Corey, and “The Monk” Lou Lazzaro, with
most finding success on the fast half-miler. NASCAR National Modified Champion Jerry
Cook, then racing out of Western N.Y., picked up the track championship in 1964 at
Canandaigua. The speedway was shuttered for some years and came back to life under
Dominic Tantello for a few short years until in 1977 Glenn Donnelly took command of
the Fairgrounds oval bringing back big-block Modified racing into a new era. Names
like Will Cagle, who transplanted from Florida, and Merv Triechler, a very young
Alan and Danny Johnson kicked of a rebirth that led to the drivers of the eighties.
Canadian Joe Plazek and “The Canadian Blast” Davey Moore along with Charlie Rudolph,
Mike “Magic Shoes” McLaughlin, Chuck Ciprich and Gary Iulg ushered in a new and
popular group of drivers that would grace the fast tacky oval. Area favorite Steve
Paine along with Bob McCreadie have set records that lead the speedway into the
modern era of fabricated chassis and sleek sheet metal. Both McCreadie and Paine
hold six track titles at Canandaigua Speedway while Paine has had a stranglehold on
the last five titles in consecutive seasons. The late nineties and into the new
millennium saw names like current WoO Late Model star Tim McCreadie cut his teeth
at Canandaigua alongside Vic Coffey, Gary Tomkins, Chuck Bower, Stewart Friesen, and
Justin Haers. Paine, who will be on hand this week for the Advance Auto Part
Modified Super DIRT Series century grind is in line to take a seventh track title
which will put him alone at the top of an “Elite Group” of drivers that have spanned
over five decades of speed. The history truly gives Canandaigua Speedway the label
of “The Land of Legends” that it is so well known today and expected for years to
come.

PRE-RACE PIT STOP POINTS

*To date on the Sunoco/Aplus Sportsman Super DIRT Series, Jordan, N.Y. racer Russ
Hefti leads both the West Region and Combined standings in this year’s quest for the
coveted Mr. DIRT Sportsman crown. Hefti is yet to pick up a win on the '05 Series
yet has without a doubt been consistent. Hefti stated, “I really want to win the
whole thing this year as I have plans to move to the big-blocks in 2006”. He is
determined and a very strong favorite to do just that. Look for the no. 0 Clearview
Windows-Sunsetter Awnings/Bicknell in victory lane Thursday as he is at home at
Canandaigua with a pair of victories already scored this year.

*In the eight races held so far this season there have already been a number of
different winners. Kyle Inman is the latest winner and he put on a great battle in
Southern Ontario at Pete and Nancy Bicknell’s Merritville Speedway to become the
eighth to claim a Sunoco/Aplus Sportsman SDS win. Racing out of Darien, N.Y. in his
Original Pizza Logs-Harnden Trucking-Gro Green Fertilizer/Bicknell entry, Inman
looks to become a strong contender from the West Region.

*Last Saturday, Aug. 6, found a few Series invaders in for the regular Paines
Motorsports DIRT Sportsman Saturday night 25-lap main at “The Land of Legends”. Mark
Chiddy from Colden, N.Y., a regular at Humberstone Speedway (Ont.) in his Mar
Dan-Mississippi Mud/Bicknell mount made the tow from Western N.Y. Dave Just and
Scott Just also made the trek to Canandaigua from Ransomville, as Dave put his Don
Mullen Roofing & Siding-JP Decal Shop/Bicknell machine into a fine eighth-place to
tune up for Thursday's Series showdown. Scott Just ran into some problems with his
JP Decal Shop-Iroqouis Water/Bicknell ride and finished 13th in the main. Roger
Chrysler of the Tuscarora Nation in Lewiston, N.Y. was also in for the second week
straight steering the Randy’s Smoke Shop-Iroquois Water/Bicknell car but he
experienced engine problems in the feature.

*The East Region may well be represented if Lake Ariel, Pa. standout Kevin Bates
decides to log some extra track time aboard his Locklin’s Bottle Gas-HCI Mortgage-
Blaise & Green Racing- BRP/Bicknell mount. Like Hefti, Bates has not yet found
victory lane on the Series Tour in 2005 despite finding ample success on the
weekend; both Hefti and Bates head the DIRT Sportsman circuit with seven wins each
along with Ohsweken (Ont.) Speedway points leader. Coupled with the fact that Bates
has never raced at Canandaigua in his young career, it may be just enough to give
him added motivation to make the mid-week haul from the Keystone State. However, the
fast rising star remains under the tutelage of all-time “Land of Legends" Modified
winner Alan Johnson who has 113 feature wins to his credit. Johnson has not won at
the speedway since 2002 and has not been a regular for many seasons but Bates may
carry a trump card in AJ if he shows.

*Brockville, Ontario East Region runner Marcel Pecore was on hand at Merrittville
for the Combined Series event in late July and is another 2005 upstart that may be
in the field Thursday. Pecore did an outstanding job as he used his provisional to
race the GM Crate powered Bicknell House car from the 30th starting slot to record a
fine 10th-place tally. His normal Kriska Transportation/ Bicknell ride was scratched
after engine problems at the Thorold speedplant.

*Young Rob Bellinger racing out of Dexter, N.Y. in the AJ Missert-JT
Construction/Troyer machine is racing fourth in the east and 13th overall in the
standings and is doing a fine job on the series. Also expected is Lance Willix ll
who won the second Thunder Alley Speedpark East Regional event and is tied for
fourth in the East with Bellinger. Willix has been strong in the Thresea Redemption
Center-Bustler Construction/Bicknell open-wheeler.

*Jim Dallett making many trips north from Vineland, N.J. despite being employed as a
full time school teacher, may also consider being on hand in his no. 95 Casino
Horizen/Bicknell car as his recent performances have powered the out-of-state
traveler into the combined top-10. Stockton, N.J. racer Sean Carman could accompany
Dallett on the long haul in his no. 47 Pleasure Pools-Lentini Auto Parts, Bicknell.
These two long haulers have both improved in recent action and are a great addition
to the Northeastern-based DIRT tour.

*Following Hefti on the West Region points chart are Ransomville native and 'Big R'
regular Kevin Wills in the familiar no. 111 Wills Dairy Farms/Bicknell. Port
Colborne, Ont. runner Rob Ledingham stands third in points in the West and is sure
to be on hand in his KN Filters-Huberstone Speedway Bicknell. He already owns a
feature win (1987) at Canandaigua and is due to crack victory lane soon.

*Stout running Canadian Wayne Conn Jr. out of St. Catharines, Ontario has had his
share of problems early in the season yet has still put the S & W Service Center-406
Auto Centre Bicknell in the top-five in the West. Can-Am winner Brian Sage, who had
his problems at Merrittville, continues to maintain his top ten standings in the
Sweeting Asphalt & Paving-Hulway Landscape/Troyer mount.

*The new GM Crate Program in the 2005 DIRT Sportsman Division has had a big impact
on the Sunoco/Aplus Sportsman Super DIRT Series in a positive way. Of the 96 teams
that have entered the initial eight races 18 have experimented with this new concept
in economic racing. They have found success not only on the tour but at their
respective home tracks. The percentage sees nearly 20% of the entries in this
program. In Western N.Y and Southern Ontario Nancy Bicknell has been a big supporter
of this program and sees it as a savior for this open wheel entry level division.
She recently stated, “The program has grown nicely in its first year and it just
makes sense. We have seen many younger racers enter as it is certainly more
affordable. Surprisingly, some of our older race veterans have made a comeback as
they too can afford to get their hands back in it.”

*The Sunoco/Aplus Sportsman Super DIRT Series has seen an unusual influx of teenage
upstarts get into the mix in 2005. Nick Cupola of St. Catharines in his Cairn Croft
Hotel-Niagara Hot Tubs/Bicknell has been steady on the Series as a 15 yr old. Young
Matt Williamson also of St. Catharines races as a regular at Ransomville and
Merrittville Speedways in his Johns Shell Gas Bar-Dagwoods Restaurant/Bicknell
powered by a GM Crate power. Matt is just 14 yrs old and a very heady young man
eager to learn both the mechanical and wheel-twisting end of the sport. Rob
Bellinger at 16 has a game plan and although not a high-buck operation his family
supports every effort wherever they take him. These young men will be the future of
DIRT MotorSports NorthEast as they insure that our style of racing remains for years
to come.

*The past three West division events at Ohsweken, Ransomville and Humberstone
speedways have brought in a field of 30-plus teams to compete for bragging rights as
this year the West seems somewhat stronger to date. Another all-star field of 30 to
35 teams is expected on Thursday. Surprisingly there is no one Canandaigua Speedway
regular following the Tour almost track point-getters still plan on signing in to
tackle the series runners. Track points leader and previous tour winner Paul
Guererri of Geneva will have the Beverage Center-Proctor Roofing-K-2
Construction-Gevo’s Rears & Gears/Bicknell in competition. Scott Schrader, also a
Series winner at Canandaigua, will be on hand with the Fox’s Auto-Dars Auto-
Manchester Mart-Breaktime Catering/Bicknell powered by a Billy Campbell engine. Last
Saturday night’s (Aug. 6) winner Danny Wiesner of Geneva is expected with his Monroe
Wheelchair-KC Services-Shuttleworth Asphalt Sealing/Bicknell. Wiesner fell to a
weight infraction at the opening West series show at Ohsweken Speedway due to no 104
racing fuel being sold which make him decide not to pursue the series from that
point. Loren Lincoln of Bristol Springs will pilot his Honeoye Auto Parts-sponsored
Lincoln Fabrication/TEO Pro Car in the line-up for the West division confrontation.
The GM Crate Program will be represented by Canandaigua regulars Eric Giguere and
Kevin Ridley in their Dept. of Veterans Affairs-PGH Freelance Imaging/TEO cars;
Giguere rides fifth in track points with Ridley ranked in the top-10. Look for
Canandaigua's own Justin Henderson racing the Synergy Global Solutions-Rick Benham
Enterprises-5 Link Communication/Bicknell to be in competition. He has not had the
season he expected with many engine issues, however this may be just the night for
the young man to pick up the second win of his career in wine country.

UPCOMING EVENTS

The Sunoco/Aplus Sportsman Super DIRT Series moves to Ransomville Speedway on
September 9th for a West Region match up. On the same Friday night, Paul Kirkland
will host a Sportsman Series East Region event at his Brockville Ontario Speedwayt.
Individual track points for the season will have ended as the overall points picture
will begin to become clear as the season winds down on the Tour. The following
evening on the 10th of September, both the West and East regions will again be in
action at Genesee Speedway and Can-Am Motorsports Park.
