ABOUT THE TRACK
Fulton Speedway is a high-banked 3/8-mile clay oval that operates every Saturday
night with Big Block/358-Modified, Sportsman, Pro Stock and Pure Stock classes on
the regular weekly card with Enduros running on a bi-weekly basis. The speedway
also hosts several sprint organizations on occasion as well as special stops by
the World of Outlaw Sprints and Stacker 2® Late Models. The 2005 regular season
has been completed with Alan Johnson (Modified & 358 Modified), Kevin Bates
(Sportsman), T.J. Fitzgibbons (Pro Stock) and Rusty Marsden (Pure Stock) the newly
crowned points champions.
TRACK HISTORY (by John Flock, Brian Dolbear, & Doug Zupan)
Fulton Speedway began life in the late 1950’s as the dream of Victoria and Millard
"Bub" Benway. Using modern construction techniques, several train carloads of
lumber, and a beautifully landscaped river front property, a speedway for the
future ---originally named Mil-Ray Raceway--- was carved by the Benway brothers
into the hills along the Oswego River in 1960.
The track itself was originally a high-banked asphalt oval that was built
literally into a natural bowl. On the other side of the backstretch is a 1/8-mile
dragstrip that runs from the river to the top of the hill. The dragstrip is now
part of the current pit area, and the concrete starting pad, the poles, and the
tower are all still there. In addition, there was also a figure eight track built
into the infield and also a motocross track. In the pits towards the tech garage,
there are some big pine trees, which was the original line between the pit area
and the forest. In the 1970’s, Bub decided to clean this area up and enlarge the
pits to its current configuration. In the mid 1980’s, Benway covered the
concession area and built the current VIP Tower. The grandstands are original and
most fans agree that there is no bad seat in the house.
During the asphalt era, the speedway was home for NASCAR Modified stars such as
Richie Evans, George Kent, Sonny Seamon, Maynard Troyer, Bernie Miller, Geoff
Bodine and Jerry Cook. Also racing at Fulton were ISMA Supermodifieds with stars
like Jimmy Shampine, Nolan Swift, Warren Coniam, Eddie Bellinger, Jr., and Norm
Mackereth making the rounds.
During the late 1970’s, there was a gas crunch and asphalt racing in Central New
York seemed to die. Benway shut the speedway down, and then made a decision that
would forever change the history of Fulton Speedway. In late 1978 he surprisingly
covered the speedway with clay, and thus a new chapter in the history of Fulton
Speedway was begun. Over a period of a few years, Fulton became one of the premier
dirt speedways in the state. The old asphalt is still underneath and is in
excellent condition. In fact, the old start/finish line is still visible under the
clay at the starter’s stand.

2004 RACE REVIEW
In the 2004 Stacker 2® Pro Stock Super DIRT Series event at Fulton Speedway, track
regular Jason Rood won the 30-lap event over the 32-car starting field. Rood, who
started in the pole position,, took the early race lead with eventuall overall
Hoosier-Sunoco Mr. DIRT champion Joey Ladouceur right behind. Ladouceur took the
lead on lap four but on a restart two laps later, Rood moved back to the point and
would lead the remainder of the event. However, Rood would have to hold off the
repeated attempts from Pete Stefanski who closed in on him as they came out of
turn four. At the line, Rood behind the wheel of his Niles Towing & Recovery-Law
Quality Machine Shop #18j Chevrolet Monte Carlo/Slawiak chassis beat out Stefanski
by just over a half car-length. Ladouceur finished third with Dave Schulz in
fourth and Clayton Benedict in fifth. Rounding out the top10 were Jipp Oritz, Joe
Stefanski, Bret Belden, Paul Stoneburg and Ray Maloney. Six cautions slowed the
event without any major incidents.
